The First Shall Be Last

Sometimes an alphabetical sort doesn’t quite fit the bill. Assume you have a list of company names sorted alphabetically, like this:

What if all your other documentation has numbers at the bottom instead of the top, for instance, if you get reports from another application or even from another company? Excel allows you to sort data based on Custom Lists. On the Custom Lists tab under Tools>Options, you can define your custom list. I created this one by moving 3M to the bottom manually, then importing that range as a custom list.

Now you can sort your list based on the custom list and 3M will appear at the bottom.

And your final sorted list will look like

If you add names to the list that aren’t in your Custom List, they will sort at the bottom.

This is a neat trick. Is there some way to insert a pre-determined list without using VBA or dragging down on the corner?
